DATASETS FROM CSV FORMAT

Did you know that you can directly import and export CSV files from an RS MINERVE database?

The current version of the software includes CSV compatibility allowing the importation and exportation of CSV files. This format is common and fast to prepare and/or modify with programs such as Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice.

HYDROLOGICAL AND HYDRAULIC MODELLING WITH RS MINERVE TEACHING SESSION (VALENCIA, SPAIN)

A new teaching session in hydrological and hydraulic modelling with the RS MINERVE software has taken place the 16th and 17th of December at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). As part of the Master’s Degree programme in Hydraulic and Environment, this course has been jointly organised by the Department of Hydraulic Engineering and Environment (DIHMA) of the UPV, the CREALP and the Hydro10 association.

The objective of the course was to train participants in hydrological and hydraulic modelling through the use of different RS MINERVE modules and to test the knowledge acquired through the application of several practical cases. At the end of the course, the students were able to run RS MINERVE tools in their respective research works or other professional activities.

The teaching session has been conducted in Spanish by the specialists Javier Hernández García and Javier Fluixá Sanmartín from the CREALP, as well as the Professor Javier Paredes Arquiola from the UPV.

COURSE ON ‘HYDROLOGICAL SIMULATION ON COMMAND LINE WITH RS MINERVE’ IN LIMA (PERU) – DECEMBER 2015

A course about ‘Hydrological simulation on command line with RS MINERVE’ have been held on December 3rd and 4th  2015 in the Headquarters of the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology of Peru (SENAMHI), in Lima, Peru.

This course, addressed to the staff of the SENAMHI, focused on the real-time exploitation of hydrological models build with RS MINERVE. Firstly, the new features of the software were shown to the participants. Then, they were taught in basic concepts of programming with VBScript. Finally, several exercices were used for applying the learned abilities in practical cases.

The course, taught by Javier Fluixá Sanmartín, from the Centre de recherche sur l’environnement alpin (CREALP-Switzerland), was organized in collaboration with the SENAMHI, the CREALP, the University of Zurich, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Care Perú, and the Proyecto Glaciares+ .

Next courses with RS MINERVE in Lima, Peru and Valence, Spain

The next courses with RS MINERVE, organized by the CREALP, will take place on 3 and 4 December in Lima and on 16 and 17 December in Valencia, Spain.

First course in Lima will be a course on ‘Hydrological and hydraulic simulations in command line with RS MINERVE’ and will explain the use of the program for real-time operational systems as well as for research projects needing an important amount of simulations or special requirements.

Second course in Valence will be a course on ‘Hydrological and hydraulic modelling with RS MINERVE’ as part of the Master’s Degree programme in Hydraulic and Environment, and will explain main aspects of the software, such as the new automatic creation of hydrological models from GIS shapefiles.

As usual, both courses will combine theoretical and practical sessions to provide the knowledge required to model hydrological basins with the help of RS MINERVE.

 

RS MINERVE 2.0 now available

The new RS MINERVE 2.0 is now available for all users!

As presented in previous post, main improvements of this new version are:

  • Channel routing models updated, including resolutions based on Kinematic Wave, Muskingum-Cunge and St-Venant, including the parameter “number of sections”.
  • Reservoir, turbine and hydropower models improved ease of use.
  • Command-line tasks to invoke VBScripts and perform simulations without interface.
  • In the GIS module, new function to create and edit full hydrological models from shapefiles.
  • Integration of background images in the model interface for any model or submodel.
  • Enhanced settings, with custom or predefined systems of units (SI International System, US Customary), and managed by model.
  • Graphic interface improved with the implementation of information by tabs.
  • Possibility of exporting model as image (.png).
  • New modular and extensible software architecture based on PRISM 5.0 and the Managed Extensibility Framework (MEF), which allows personal developements.

If you use any previous version (=<1.3.1.4), please uninstall it and install the new version.

 

RS MINERVE 2.0 available on 13 October 2015

RS MINERVE around the world

RS MINERVE has increased its visibility since its creation in 2011. Over 2015, we have had visits from 56 different countries. Main visitors come from Switzerland, Peru, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, the United States, Canada and South Korea.

During the first 7 months of 2015, we have had more than 3’000 pages viewed by more than 1’000 visitors accounting for more than 300 downloads of RS MINERVE. If we add direct downloads from the officiel download page on the Crealp website, more than 700 people have already downloaded RS MINERVE this year !! We are becoming a big community and we thank all the users for being part of this adventure !

 

Operational forecast newly based on RSMINERVE 2.0

Since July 2015, the CREALP (Centre de recherche sur l’environnement alpin) provides hydrological forecasts based on the new software version RS MINERVE 2.0.  The forecast results are used as a basis for flood prediction and flood emergency response planning for the Canton of Valais.

Three times a day, the operational system performs real-time forecasts using RS MINERVE 2.0 with command-line scripts.  Two simulation tasks are run at each time:

  • The first task, called ‘Control simulation’ simulates the last 24 hours, based on observed meteorological and measured river discharges. This task serves as control and variable initialization for the second task.
  • The second task is the ‘Forecast simulation’ which provides predicted flows for the Rhone and its tributaries, using the COSMO-7 meteorological forecast from MeteoSwiss.

Called from a DOS Terminal, each task is composed of a VBScript containing all the functions required to perform a hydrological simulation, such as launching RS MINERVE, opening the model, loading the inputs, performing the simulation and saving the results.

Documentation about the use of command-line scripts will be available with the official release of RSMinerve 2.0 in Fall 2015.

 

Why you should try RS MINERVE !

Have you ever used RS MINERVE ? Not yet ? Do you know its advantages compared to other similar programs? Some reasons why RS MINERVE could be really interesting for you are given hereafter :

  • The hydrological-hydraulic model can be built with different hierarchical levels (called sub-models) which easily allow the organization of your model per region. A must for large models!
  • The different hydrological models (SOCONT, HBV, SAC-SMA, etc) can be easily converted from one to another in order to test which model provides the best performance.
